Title:

How to Use Published Engine Oil Data to Select Your Engine Oil

Creating a Composite Engine Oil Evaluation System

Summary
In this technical paper, we will discuss the basic steps involved in creating a composite motor oil evaluation system to help make motor oil selection a more educated process. With these basic steps, you should be able to develop your own, personal, engine oil selection system.

Introduction
Experts know that the quality of motor oil can be the single greatest factor that influences an engine's reliability and performance. With the large number of new motor oil products on the market, we have a greater variety to choose from than ever before. When you include price differentials easily eclipsing 500% and oil property differences greater than 250%, it's easy to want to avoid sifting through hundreds of products and instead choose the 'ignorance is bliss route.' Contrary to the beliefs of many of us: Motor oils are not all made the same. This document will reveal the four reasons why.

Choosing motor oil among the highest in purity, quality and performance can provide us with better fuel efficiency, greater engine longevity & performance, lower emissions and fewer oil changes. Instead of simply using the small amount of information on the back of a bottle of motor oil or using whatever your friends or mechanic use, this paper will show you how to select your motor oil an educated, more scientific way.

Using the technical information made available to us by oil manufacturers and the API & ACEA plus other intangibles, such as: manufacturer marketing claims, personal experience & long-drain factors, we will build a simple, uniform and repeatable method for evaluating and comparing motor oil for use in our personal vehicles. In the process, you will learn how to read and understand typical, published motor oil properties.
